HAZARIBAG: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Saturday launched a mass insurance scheme with a death benefit coverage of Rs 5 lakh for journalists working in print and electronic media. The scheme covers mediapersons right from the panchayat to district-level of the seven districts of North Chotanagpur division.

It was announced that 990 mediapersons from seven districts including Hazaribag, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Koderma, Chatra, Giridih and Dhanbad were registered and covered under the scheme for journalists introduced for the first time here by the state government on the behest of the CM.

He said, “I have enormous respect for newsmen as they are the ones who give us a real picture of the state and focus on the problems of common people. I have already issued orders asking district authorities concerned to provide security to newsmen.”

The CM added that he was shocked to know the plight of the journalists in the state, particularly in the mufassil and rural parts. He, however, didn’t stop short of patting his own back for what he said was the shortest spell of ruling Jharkhand for a CM. He added that what he achieved in this period could not be ccomplished by the preceding governments. The state will take up the matter of launching more welfare schemes for mediapersons with the Majithia Commission formed by the Centre, he promised.

He also announced that he will take up the issue of launching pension schemes, housing loans, mediclaim and other facilities as suggested by journalists of the above-mentioned districts. The CM also distributed group insurance documents to the newsmen.

Earlier in the day, reporters from all the seven districts who participated in the programme placed the problems faced by them. They underscored the need for steps to be taken for the issuance of Press Accredition cards to reporters and also for the simplification of the process of the issuance of these cards. Himangshu Shekhar Choudhury, who cobducted the meeting, said these schemes would be launched in the entire state and Saturday’s function was just the beginning of things to come.
